چکیده

Let X be a C’ vectorfield on S* = {(x, y, z) E iw3: x2 +y2 + z2 = 1 } such that no open subset of S* is the union of closed orbits of X. If X has only a finite number of singular orbits and satisfies one additional condition, then it is shown that X is topologically equivalent to a polynomial vectorfield. A corollary is that a foliation 9 of the plane is topologically equivalent to a foliation by orbits of a polynomial vectorfield if and only if F has only a finite number of inseparable leaves. Commuting Vectorfields on Open Manifolds

Let M be an open orientable differentiate n-manifold. More precisely, we will take M and vectorfields over M to be of class C. A nonzero vectorfield X on i f will be called nonrecurrent if the 1-dimensional foliation associated with X is regular (see [4, Chapter I]) and admits no compact leaves. The notation H(M; Z)=Q shall mean that the ^-dimensional singular integral cohomology of M is trivia...

Straightening soliton curves

A canonical straightening process is described for soliton curves associated with the localized induction hierarchy. Following computer animated examples, the present topic is placed in the context of a larger theme: the soliton class is a natural setting for representation of diverse topological and geometrical behavior of curves and their motions. The constructions we describe here pertain to...

Highest weight representations of the Virasoro algebra

We consider representations of the Virasoro algebra, a one-dimensional central extension of the Lie algebra of vectorfields on the unit circle. Positive-energy, highest weight and Verma representations are defined and investigated. The Shapovalov form is introduced, and we study Kac formula for its determinant and some consequences for unitarity and degeneracy of irreducible highest weight repr...

A Class of Topological Foliations on S That Are Topologically Equivalent to Polynomial Vector fields

Let F be an oriented topological foliation on S = {(x, y, z) ∈ R;x + y + z = 1} having only a finite number of singularities. If F has only a finite number of closed orbits and satisfies one additional condition, then it is shown that F is topologically equivalent to (the foliation induced by) a polynomial vector field.

The Poincaré Lemma in Subriemannian Geometry

This work is a short, self-contained introduction to subriemannian geometry with special emphasis on Chow’s Theorem. As an application, a regularity result for the the Poincaré Lemma is presented. At the beginning, the definitions of a subriemannian geometry, horizontal vectorfields and horizontal curves are given. Then the question arises: Can any two points be connected by a horizontal curve?...
